The Project:
There’s nothing more upsetting for a business than being forced to close due to a major incident. Shear Success in Tamworth was understandably devastated to suffer a serious flood, which forced all the staff to work as mobile hairdressers until we could step in.
As a silver lining to this disaster, it did mean the client could work with the design expertise of our director, Sarah Kahn, to create a completely new style and optimise the workspace into a flowing new look as part of the refurbishment.
The Challenges:
Flooding in a building can have significant issues for the existing structure. We needed to dry out the building, but in a controlled manner. Forcing the studio to dry out too quickly could result in further damage.
Another key concern for the client was the timescales the renovations would take. The flooding and damages had all happened close to Christmas, which is a busy season for the hairdressing industry and one the client was keen not to miss.
The Journey:
The first step to refurbishing this salon was to bring de-humidifiers in and get the building dried out. We installed specialist equipment to remove the water, and our team took turns visiting daily to empty the equipment and monitor the progress of the dry-out.
At the same time our designer, Sarah, got to work creating a new salon design that reflected the brand identity of Shear Success and created a warm and inviting space for clients. The salon owner had some wonderful ideas, and Sarah worked closely with her to translate those into a reality.
Whenever we work on a renovation, we ask the business owner about their key requirements and consider how the space will be used. In this case, the client was keen to make the useable space more efficient, and so our design allowed them to add more workstations. Hairdressing, by the nature of the job, also uses a lot of hair products and chemicals, which can stain. To make it easier for the business to care for the new salon, we used hard-wearing materials with a finish that was more stain-resistant and easier to clean.
As always, we have our preferred partners that we use for specialist tasks. For this project, we brought in Ubitec Electrical to complete the re-wire and repairs needed because of the flooding. ADR Decorators added the finishing touches.
The Result:
The client had some great ideas but didn’t know how to bring them to fruition. Sarah worked closely with her to create a functional design that worked for a busy salon, using mood boards to brainstorm materials and colour schemes, and to capture the client’s preferences. While the salon owner was busy keeping the business running and appointments maintained, she was delighted that Sarah and the team took all the stress out of the fit-out by overseeing the project management.
The result was a bright, well-spaced new salon with a bespoke product shelving system, improved lighting, added workstations and easy-to-clean surfaces. The client, her team and her customers were delighted to be back in the salon in time for the festive season.
