When it comes to budget, we like to account for every pound.

It’s a running theme in most building jobs – everyone assumes that the work will go over budget. At SKK, we don’t like that. We are firm believers that when an honest budget is given from the start, it should be met. When we quote, we include everything. Then we talk you through it, so you can compare what other shopfitters say to what we are actually going to do. Once you have, you’ll find that we offer comprehensive quotes that account for all the details others might refer to as ‘miscellaneous’ – and you know exactly what to budget for.

When it comes to handling the budget, you need an expert. Someone who knows the trade inside out, who can assess how complex a job will be and plan for the unexpected in advance, and who is straight-talking in setting your expectations. What you need is a Spencer.

Spencer Turner – Operations Manager.

You can list the accreditations, like the SMSTS qualification for project and site management, and the LMI course. But when it comes to understanding the industry, it’s 42 years of experience, being hands-on with tools and running a business from the tender age of 24 that gives Spencer the expertise.

As Operations Manager, Spencer oversees the logistics and planning of projects. He knows that clients want an instant quote – usually shortly after arriving for the initial survey – but he always delivers details that mean he can plan for every potential in the job. His mantra is to prepare for the worst and aim for the very best.

Spencer started his career as a carpenter and joiner. However, times have changed and it’s hard to get more of the next generation into the industry, with a severe lack of apprentices willing to get hands-on, working the unsociable hours a shopfitter often has to manage. As a result, there is a lack of quality tradesmen available – which is why he is even more proud to be a family business with his daughter, Sarah, as the Director of SKK. Her design skills and attention to detail coordinate nicely with his experience – and clients recognise the quality of the results.

Every office has one person who knows where everything goes

When we first decided to introduce the SKK team, we asked everyone to describe how they felt their teammates would see them. Spencer chose the word ‘nightmare’ and no one disagreed.

He’s always on the go, juggling a million things at a time. When it’s not overseeing renovations, he’s driving a minibus or doing some maintenance for Free@Last, a charity in Nechells that supports children to escape poverty, mentoring the children or supporting the leadership team.

So, when you have directors, operations and project managers overseeing the builds, we all know it’s the office staff who keep everything on track. That’s why we have a great team who manage the finances, keep on top of the paperwork and chase all the permissions required.

Introducing the SKK Interiors office team

Debra Morton – Personal Assistant

Debra has been working alongside Spencer for over 23 years. Her speciality is keeping on top of the whirlwind of activities he is involved in and answering questions for clients. When she needs a rest, she gets to be a proud Nana to her beautiful granddaughter.

Jane Callaghan – Personal Assistant

Another longstanding member of the team, Jane is now Personal Assistant to Pete. She’s been fielding client queries for 23 years and says one thing she has learnt is how to manage all different types of personalities. We assume they weren’t all Pete’s.

Lesley James – Personal Assistant

Lesley is Personal Assistant to Sarah. She joined the team after Spencer told his postman he needed another hand in the office, and the postman mentioned it to her, which shows that the post always delivers. Once Lesley commits, she likes to see a project through to completion, and not just at work. She has just received a silver medal for completing 25 donations as a Blood Donor.

Julia Perkins – Finance Manager

Julia has been part of the team for 17 years and is the one with the hand on the budget. As Finance Manager she not only keeps the payroll running, she is the person that monitors the budgets on projects and makes sure every procedure is in place.

When we asked her what makes SKK Interiors the best shopfitters she said, “We might be a small team, but we’re all established, long term and knowledgeable.
